Mexico eyes plastics ban

A bill authored by Senator Loren Legarda has been passed which prohibits the use of plastic bags in groceries, restaurants and other establishments.

The City of San Fernando, Apalit and Masantol are among the local government units in Pampanga which supported the bill.

Legarda hails passage of UniFAST law

Sen. Loren Legarda on Monday hailed the passage of the Unified Student Financial Assistance System for Tertiary Education (UniFAST) law, or Republic Act 10687, which was signed by President Aquino on October 15.

Legarda, one of the authors of the UniFAST Law, explained that the measure was crafted in order to expand and rationalize the government’s scholarship program and to ensure that Filipino students, especially those belonging to indigent families, are fully supported throughout their studies.

Culture body exec says IPs offer peace lessons

In her address at the same event, Sen. Loren Legarda, chair of the Senate committees on climate change and on cultural communities, asked local governments to preserve local culture.

One way local governments can do this, Legarda said, is to enforce Republic Act No. 9242 (Philippine Tropical Fabrics Law) which encourages local officials to use indigenous fabrics for uniforms, which would provide a steady market for indigenous communities that still produce these fabrics.

Senator Loren Legarda invites everyone to view and observe basket and mat weavers from Sorsogon City as they showcase their weaving techniques at the National Museum on October 23 (Friday) and 24 (Saturday), 2015.
Featured weavers are Monserat Discaya, Rosie Bañares, Teresita Ebrada, Serena Detera and Divina Dumamay.
