Legarda Commends Trisha Reyes for Winning UNEP Painting Competition

SENATOR LOREN LEGARDA TODAY FILED P. S. RESOLUTION NO. 627 TO CONGRATULATE AND COMMEND TRISHA CO REYES FOR WINNING THE 20TH UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMM’S GLOBAL PAINTING COMPETITION AT THE TUNZA INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN AND YOUTH CONFERENCE ON THE ENVIRONMENT IN BANDUNG, INDONESIA.
Last September 27, 2011, Trisha Co Reyes, a 13-year-old girl from Tondo, Manila, bagged the top prize at the 20th United Nations Environment Programme’s Global Painting Competition at the Tunza International Children and Youth Conference on the Environment in Bandung, Indonesia.’
“Trisha Co Reyes’ entry, a painting of a young girl parting a grey curtain to expose two different faces of nature, was the best among 4 million other paintings from ninety-nine (99) countries,”Legarda cited.
Legarda said Trisha’s winning masterpiece will be reproduced by the United Nations Environment Programme in postcards, calendars and art posters in its campaign to “preserve natur” and to encourage “peers to adopt more environmentally-friendly lifestyles”.
Trisha Co Reyes, a freshman at the St. Stephen’s High School in Manila, wished to depict in her painting”assive deforestation and loss of biodiversity” on the one hand, and the “biological treasures that the Earth possesses” on the other.
The Global Painting Competition on the Environment is annually organized by the UNEP, the Japan-based Foundation for Global Peace and Environment (FGPE), Bayer and Nikon Corporation, The theme of the 20th UNEP’s Global Painting Competition is “Life in the Forests.”
Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committee on Climate Change said Trisha Co Reyes’ exceptional achievement at the 20th UNEP’s Global Painting Competition merits commendation for not only is it a celebration of Filipino creativity but also a reflection of the increasing concern for environmental protection among Filipinos.
