Legarda lauds HoR approval of the BARMM Elections Postponement bill

September 16, 2021

Three-term Senator, Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda, principal author of the bill, commended the approval on third reading of House Bill No. 10121 which seeks to amend Section 13 Article XVI of Republic Act No. 11054, also known as the Organic Law for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Legarda, who filed measure as House Bill 8116 on December 1, 2020, expressed that the passage of this bill will allow the Bangsamoro Government to attend to more urgent needs of the people especially during this time of the pandemic.

The bill provides for the postponement of the conduct of the first regular elections of the Bangsamoro government in 2022 to 2025 instead, as mandated by RA 11054.

According to Legarda, the postponement of the elections to synchronize with the 2025 national elections would allow for the strengthening of the BARMM’s foundations for a stronger regional government and economy while also providing an adequate amount of time for the full transition of the BARMM to fully transpire.

“The additional few years would ensure a more effective implementation of the programs and operations of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority. I therefore join the entire Bangsamoro region in welcoming the approval of this important measure ,” Legarda concluded.
