March 2, 2010

IN THE YEARLY FLOWER FESTIVAL IN BAGUIO THIS WEEKEND, THE ONLY ENVIRONMENTAL ADVOCATE RUNNING FOR THE VICE PRESIDENCY LOREN LEGARDA REMINDED PARTICIPANTS OF THE PANAGBENGA FESTIVAL ABOUT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF TAKING CARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT SO WE CAN CONTINUE ENJOYING THE BEAUTY OF NATURE.
“The Panagbenga Flower festival is a celebration of the beauty of nature, and a reminder of the need for environmental protection,” she said.
Loren lauded the people of Baguio for holding this kind of event which exemplifies environmental appreciation, consciousness and awareness.
The noted legislator responsible for the passage of major environmental laws also warned that climate change is a clear and present danger to mankind.
“The worst is yet to come, considering that the Philippines is exposed not only to typhoons and tropical cyclones but also to many other climate-related hazards such as floods, landslides and drought,” she said.
Loren stressed the urgent task to transform into concrete action the firm consensus to reverse climate change. “It is in this sense that there should be a general appreciation for the activity here today,” said Loren who chairs the Senate Committee on Climate Change.
She added, “We are gathered here today to appreciate the beauty of nature. But flowers and trees are not only beautiful to look at, but more importantly they protect the earth. In turn, we need to protect them.”
Loren who heads Luntiang Pilipinas has planted 2 million trees and continues to encourage people to be with them in this fight to beat climate change, save lives and save the environment.
